Designing and decorating our home is one of the most important and interesting task when you want to have a beautiful home. There may be many options of home décor for everybody especially when your home is under construction because during the construction time only, you may modify certain things in your home. The same things can become a complicated task to do once your home has been constructed. But even if you have a well constructed home, sometimes you encounter with certain problems which seem like having no solution at all. These problems may be common to most of us. Sometimes we want to provide a more spacious look to our home. Sometimes we want to provide more length to our room designs and so on. In this article we will discuss certain common problems of house decoration and interior design which can be solved with a little creativity and cleverness.

Room Design Tip - How to lengthen a room
Small space is always a point that brings limitations to our many ideas of decoration. If a room is short in space or length, we cannot arrange it in many ways that we desire. So before you become upset on this shortage of length, I would like to tell you that the length of any room can be given the illusion of a desired length. Even if  you have a small room in your home you can easily achieve the illusion of length. There are two solutions for that. If you have no problem in following some bold patterns then just try this simple idea. You just have to paint a few horizontal lines in the middle of that wall from where you want to provide that extra length. These bold horizontal lines should be painted in bold colours. The creation of such bold lines will provide the required illusion of increased length in the room. Another option of providing length to a room is by using the  pictures.

The use of picture or photographs involve strategic placement of any of the art pictures or photographs along with some strong horizontal line in the print. This placement of pictures along with the horizontal line will let you achieve the desired length. For instance, you may select few long and rectangular photographs or pictures having horizontal panoramic prints. These panoramic prints can be of ocean, beaches, green fields, mountains etc. This way you will be able to extend the length of your room quite naturally.

For the option related to pictures you do not need many pictures or photographs. Even two, three or four pics can also make you successful in your aim of providing length to your room. These pictures will give sufficient length and desired look to the wall as well as to your room.

Room Design Tip - How to broaden a narrow room

Till now we have discussed about how to make a room appear lengthy in its size. Now I will tell you that if you have a living room or bedroom or just any other room which you think is a little narrow then again there is a solution for this problem too. A simple strategy and trick can make your room appear broader then before. If you want to follow this trick of broadening your room then all you need is just a tin of paint, a wall mirror and also a big colorful wall picture. While choosing the paint for this purpose of providing breadth to your room, do not forget to bring a paint which is darker in shade. To be more clear, this paint should be at least two shades darker then the paint on other walls of your room.

Now all you need to do with this tin of paint is to paint the required wall. Once you are done with the painting task of this wall, try to get a big colourful picture. Now just hang this colorful and lively large painting on the painted wall. A picture having flowers or natural scenic scenes will be the best option for this purpose.

After you have hanged the picture on the wall, just take a large decorative mirror and hang it on the wall adjacent to that of the painted wall carrying the picture. The effect will be that the picture will reflect in the mirror and the addition of the darker colours will create the illusion of the much-needed depth. The combination of dark colour on one of the walls, a big picture or painting and the decorative mirror will together make the room appear wider.

Room Design Tip - How to Heighten a Low Ceiling

So now you know how to broaden a room and how to provide length to a small room. Now some of you might be struggling with the problem of rooms having low ceilings. The low ceilings  give an oppressive feeling and you feel a little suffocated under such ceilings. The rooms which have a high ceiling provide a feeling of space, freshness and air to the people in that room. Now again do not worry as there are few interior design solutions which will help you overcome this problem of low ceiling.

The room having a low ceiling should have a flooring with a darker colour. You need to put down a darker floor covering to reduce the effect of low ceiling. You may have a dark coloured wooden floor or a dark coloured carpet or a lino for this purpose. Now the second step is to paint the walls with a colour that should be a shade lighter than the colour of the floor. You may also use the wallpaper of a light color on walls. The best colour for your low ceiling would be the white colour. Because white paint always make the room look light, spacious, full of brightness and also draws the eyes upwards. Isn’t that true?

Now as an additional support you should hang some wall pictures. These pictures should contain  bold and strong vertical lines. These pictures with vertical lines will create the illusion of required height and the ceiling would seem to be on height. You can also use portrait prints like  vertical landscapes, for instance, lighthouses, trees, cityscapes etc. the combination of  dark coloured  floor, light walls and vertical print paintings will help you reduce the effect of low ceiling in the room.

Room Design Tip – Keep your house clutter free

One of the best option to make your house look spacious is to keep less articles in it. If you have a small guest room, keep the furniture which is light, small, cute and not at all big and bulky. You may also use few delicate chairs and a small table in a small room. Do not fill your small house with big antiques, a number of paintings, bulky furniture or utensils. Keep your house clutter free and clean. The lesser furniture and article you’ll have, the spacious your room and house will look.

Room Design Tip – Use light paints as a base

If you have a small house, then make sure that you use light paint in your rooms. The dark colours make your room look smaller and less spacious. On the other hand the light paints provide an airy feeling of more space. The light colours also give you the advantage of matching curtains or sheets with them as many options can be tried with these light colours. On the other hand, the darker shades just become a constraint later on with which you may try few selected colours only.
