So what exactly a carpet is? Well it is actually a  textile floor covering which consists of an upper layer of "pile". The pile is attached to a backing. The pile or the upper layer of the carpet  is usually made of wool or a manmade fibre for example, polypropylene. The fiber of the upper layer is well tested and often heat-treated so that it may maintain its structure.

The attachment is done through knots. It is also worth mentioning here that three types of knots are used in the knotted pile carpet. The knot called shag was very much popular in the period of 1970s. This knot was used to form the pile or nap of the carpet. Though the knotting in these carpets is also done through machines today but the knotting by hands has been quite popular. Even today many people love to buy a knotted pile carpet in which the knots are tied through hands. This knotting by hands is also prevalent in Oriental rugs and carpets.  You can better understand the knots tied by hands through the example of Kashmir carpets . The Kasmiri carpets are also hand-knotted.

People who are experts in weaving use their creativity to create beautiful unique and intricate patterns in these carpets. While weaving the carpet, the pattern, colours and themes are pre-decided so that the carpet can be weaved accordingly. Though many people are in the misconception that the woven carpets are not so expensive and that ,they are cheap because they are of a low quality. But the truth is that the woven carpets are considered of a high quality and some of these carpets are quite expensive. These carpets look marvelous with their colourful themes and unique designs.

The pile that is used in the woven carpet can be the plush or the berber. The plush carpet is a cut pile while the berber carpet is a loop pile. The new styles of carpet have also come up with the combination of these  two styles. These new style carpets are called cut and loop carpeting.

Carpets that are tufted can be of different types like those with the cut pile, loop pile or the ones with the combination of both cut piles and the loop piles. The machines are also useful as they are able to  produce a lot more lengthy  carpets than weaving.
