The recent Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race was a grueling round-the-clock marathon that involved a number of teams and was filled with interesting events. But the end of the race has been marked as a momentous event for the German auto maker Audi who claimed its first title for the overall victory in the Nurburgring race. The top two spots were bagged by Audi; after 155 laps the Audi Sport Team Phoenix R8 LMS Ultra grabbed the chequered flag and was soon followed by the Audi R8 which was a contender of the same team.
The total participants in the race were 31 GT3- specification cars but after 24 hours of difficult and eventful racing only 16 cars were classified by the end. In the beginning the pole was grabbed by the Team Schubert with the BMW Z4 GT3 that led the race for the maximum time in the initial part, but later on it faced some driveshaft issues. There was one more BMW Z4 GT3 which was leading the race but it also faced some transmission problems which paved the way for the powerful Audi R8s who ended up dominating the race with a finish of 1-2.
Marc Basseng, Christopher Haase, Markus Winkelhock and Frank Stippler were the men behind the wheels of the Audi R8 LMS that won the title. In the words of Markus Winkelhock, the weekend was a great one for the team and they were driving a perfect and unmistakable car which faced no issues. He expressed his elation in standing at the podium and also mentioned that the race was competitive and tough. Audi has been participating in the challenging Nurburgring race for over 20 years now and this is the first time it bagged the title; the moment was an historic one for the brand as a whole.
After 20 years winning the race was not the end for Audi and it also landed up winning the SP 4T class with the Audi TT. This SP 4T class title was momentous because out of three drivers one was Aditya Patel from Chennai India. Aditya is backed by Audi India and he surpassed all the expectations by performing exceptionally well and displaying skills like reliability and competency. He drove for the team Pro-Handicap e.V who clocked 129 laps in 24 hours; the figure is just 29 laps less than the winner of the race.
The Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India to partner with Messe Frankfurt for ACMA Automechanika New Delhi.
Mumbai: ACMA the apex body of the Auto Component Industry in India will partner with Messe Frankfurt to organise ACMA Automechanika New Delhi. Automechanika is the leading global trade fair for automotive aftermarket products. The show is slated to be held in New Delhi, India in 7 – 10 February 2013. Further, internationally, ACMA and Messe Frankfurt will promote participation of Indian automotive component manufacturers and other related companies at Automechanika’s global fairs, specifically at the Frankfurt fair with a dedicated pavilion for the ACMA members.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr Arvind Kapur, President ACMA said, “We will work closely with Messe Frankfurt to ensure significant presence of ACMA members at our pavilion at the various Automechanika shows. To begin with, this year the ACMA pavilion at the Automechanika Frankfurt spread over 650 sq mtrs of prime location will showcase over 30 leading Indian auto component manufacturers. ACMA will also mobilise business delegations to Automechanika’s twelve worldwide fairs held in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa.”
A guesstimate is being built by the industry analysts on the partnership of Fiat and Suzuki because the partnership of Fiat with Tata end up in last April and Fiat is making its way to India, which is Asia’s third largest car market. The sales of the joint venture of the Italian automaker and the Indian automaker decreased to 24 percent for the last fiscal year and the six year old deal was ended, where in Fiat was allowed to sell vehicles at dealership’s of Tata. Ashvin Chotai, managing director of industry researcher Intelligence Automotive Asia said that Tata has many other quandaries to think about and work upon them especially after the launch of Jaguar Land Rover.
That is obvious that if the relationship of Fiat with Tata Motors is degrading then the alliance of Fiat with Suzuki will definitely grow up. Suzuki has a 42 percent of share in the Indian market from which Fiat can get benefits by using its dealership networks and its expertise in the regional areas. At the same time Suzuki can obtain increased access to Fiat’s diesel motors and its dealership in developing markets. However, the Italian auto car maker has made no official comments on the potential partnership although the two companies have the past of association. Fiat supplies diesel motors to Suzuki since 2009 and a jointly developed SUV was launched in the year 2006. But Suzuki might be cautious before it gets into any deal with Fiat because of the recent tie-up with Volkswagen, which failed and is now being resolved in the court.
Volkswagen to donate proceeds of auctioned IPL Edition Vento and memorabilia of IPL stars to World Wide Fund for Nature - India
Mumbai: With curtains to soon come down on another year of a very successful association with IPL, Europe’s leading automobile manufacturer, Volkswagen would once again be donating proceeds from the online auction of the IPL Edition Vento to World Wide Fund for Nature - India (WWF - India). However this year the Brand has further extended its support towards the conservation organization by exclusively putting up for auction the cricketing possessions of IPL stars like Lasith Malinga, Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle at an event held here in Pune.
The proceeds from this auction will also be donated to WWF - India. Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Neeraj Garg, Member of Board and Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars said, “Keeping in line with our Think Blue. campaign we have been contributing to WWF - India for the last two IPL seasons. It is our privilege to provide support towards preserving our nature.”

Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates purchased a Porsche 911 in the year 1979 and sold it. since then it traveled in Austria and now it has been scheduled to be auctioned in Vienna, Austria on 6th of June of this year as a vintage car. According to the story of the auctioners of the car, this 1979 Porsche 911 was first purchased by Bill Gates who always admired these high speed cars, in the year 1979 at New Mexico very soon after he had founded the company Microsoft with the partner Paul Allen.
He relocated the company to Seattle, Washington and on the way to Seattle, Gates was riding Porsche 911 when he got three tickets for crossing the speed limit in the same night. as a result of high speeding he was later arrested and Allen had to come and bail him out. Bill Gates sold this car in the year 1990’s and from there it was registered in Austria and till date it is registered there only. This European Union car still has features which are US specific.

Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) has once again dethroned a car maker from the top position and this time it is the Japanese auto giant Toyota Motors, who has been outshined by BMW in an annual ranking of the world’s top most brands. This ranking has been released as the BrandZ top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands by the Millward Brown, which is a market research company. According to this ranking the positions and brand values of Mercedes Benz, Audi and Volkswagen have been improved.
The Global Brand Director of Millward Brown, Mr. Peter Walshe mentioned that BMW is an efficient communicator which other car-makers care not and it undoubtedly has a very decent product line-up. He added that as a part of the greatest brands of the world BMWs consistency in terms of creating something different for the highly competitive auto market has been remarkable. Toyota Motors ruled the top spot in the automotive brands from 2006 till 2009, in 2010 BMW emerged as the top most players but in 2011 again, Toyota surpassed BMW.
According to Mr. Walshe, the troubles for Toyota started when the Japanese lands were struck by the unfortunate Tsunami and earthquake last year which made it lose its position as one of the best brands in the world. He added that Toyota Motors is known for the good value, reliability, quality and trustworthiness of its products and esp the mid-range products and due to the natural disasters all the issues being faced are finance related and not brand control and absolutely not in control of the company.
The disaster of last year definitely affected the brand value ranking of the companies like Nissan, Lexus and Honda but somehow they managed to remain in the top 10. On the other hand the German brands – Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and Audi all were able to climb a bit in the brand value rankings on account of their increased business in the countries like India and China. Mr. Walshe stated that the basic reason behind the success of German auto giants is the benefit they are getting from exports.
In the ranking list only one auto maker from Korean lands could manage to bag a place in the top 10 which turns out to be Hyundai. According to Mr. Walsche Hyundai sitting at the ninth position is deriving benefits from the customers around the world who prefer quality and style at better prices that what premium brands have to offer.
The 2012 list of top 100 brands was topped by the previous year winner Apple with a brand value of $182.9 billion, IBM climbed at number 2 position with a brand value of $116 billion and pushed Google to number 3 who has a brand value of $107.9 billion. The list is prepared after interviewing more than 1 million consumers across the world and analyzing the financial and business performance of each and every company that is supplied by the data from the Bloomberg and Datamonitor.

The Japanese car giant Honda Motors is also following the suit of creating compact MPVs, which have been bagging a lot of demand and appreciation lately. Reportedly, in order to rival the recently launched Maruti Ertiga compact MPV, Honda is planning on rolling out its first product of the segment code named as 2NH by the end of the year 2014. Word is, the company has already initiated the work on the creation of a three-row seven-seater compact utility vehicle, which will be sitting on the same platform as the next generation Honda Jazz.
In certain car markets of Asia, Honda sells an MPV based on the Jazz platform known as the Freed MPV; the said neoteric MPV will emerge as the next generation model of the Freed MPV. Japan's second biggest car makers company Nissan Motors is planning to expand sales of its vehicles of the Datsun brand in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. This information was revealed by the chief executive officer Mr. Carlos Ghosn. Ghosn reported that Nissan Datsun will be on sale in these regions after the company has introduced the Datsun vehicles in the Indonesia, India and Russia starting from 2014. Ghosn also added that the company is moving forward slowly with appropriate planning and measures which is affordable and feasible for the company. The Datsun brand is being re-used to capture demand for the low end cars in the emerging markets after three decades as per the plans, which Nissan had made for the increase in the share of the company’s global vehicle sales expecting it to be 8 percent by 2017.
Nissan Motors is expecting Datsun to register at least half of the total sales at the new regions in about five years of time. Nissan registered a rise of 3.8 percent at the Tokyo market trading center with 771 yen and the benchmark Nikkei added only 1 percent with 224 average stocks in the same trading market. Ghosn also said that Stock piling is not a problem for Nissan and resulting to this the production in China is on a full throttle and also there are possibilities that the Chinese market will increase 7 to 8 percent this year. Ghosn further told about the company’s plan which is aiming to capture 10 percent of global luxury car market by the fiscal year 2016. He further stated that he is expecting that the Japanese currency yen will weaken to 80 to 85 yen against the currency dollar in recent times.
